The University’s men’s golf team looks to continue the success it had in the 2013 season.

The Royals with many seniors, including Grant Gulick, Brandon Gano, Charles Hudacek, Kevin Kucharski, Andrew Loyack and Dan Penetar.

Scranton is currently undefeated and has wins against Baptist Bible College and Marywood University. The team also placed first at the Utica College Fall Invitational in Clinton, N.Y.

In the season opener, Gulick shot four under par and finished with a career low of 68, which was the second-lowest round in the Royals’ history.

Gulick, one of the team’s captains, said that the players worked hard over the summer and bonded with the new members of the team. While the team is still undefeated, it has lofty goals for the remainder of the year.

“For our team, I would like to make it to nationals and win our conference. Personally, I would like to be ranked top 100 in Division III golf,” Gulick said.

In order to turn these goals into reality, the team plans on preparing for the conference by continuing to practice hard and remain focused throughout the rest of the season.

Although the team is led by a senior class, Scranton welcomes two first-year players in Kevin Nardella and Tyler Huggins.

Sophomores Ryan Brown, Carmine Gerrity-Germei and Eric Montella. Juniors Josh Jimenez, Eric Meyer and Dominick Sparks round out the roster as returning players.

The team is coached by veteran Ed Karpovich, who is entering his 32nd year at the helm. Under his direction, Scranton has won the Glenmura National Collegiate Invitational Championships for three straight years and has three consecutive top-five finishes at the Empire 8 Conference Championships.

The Royals will have to continue their success without graduates Jamie Bresnahan, Michael Brown, Michael Genello and Justin Riley.
Gulick said the team has to stay on track going forward and continue playing good golf.

“We just need to be more consistent on the course,” Gulick said.

Scranton plays in the Anthracite Golf Championships at 1 p.m. Monday.
