The Jane Kopas Women’s Center (JKWC) is planning Love Your Body Day to raise awareness for body appreciation.

According to the JKWC’s page on The University’s website, Love Your Body Day is inspired by the Love Your Body Campaign by the National Organization for Women.

The National Organization for Women says on its website that the goal of the campaign is to as challenge “the message that a woman’s value is best measured through her willingness and ability to embody current beauty standards.”

Love Your Body Day is a day for University students “to celebrate, appreciate and value their bodies,” according to an email interview with senior Olivia Wynn.

“Love Your Body Day seeks to encourage and support individuals to give gratitude for his or her own body. [It] is about loving yourself inside and out,” Wynn said.

Junior Emily Toledo works in the JKWC and is helping plan the event.

“It’s about being inclusive of gender, age and body type. We’re not just targeting women … there’s a good portion of men who have this issue [with self-esteem],” Toledo said. “It’s a celebration for your body but also a deeper gratitude for your abilities. This includes reflecting and challenging the media’s message of the perfect body because in reality we all should appreciate our bodies.”

Toledo also said that the event is not just about promoting a positive body image, but it is also about encouraging body health.

There will be three different stations set up during Love Your Body Day.

JKWC will set up a video watching station, and students will be able to make their own toolkits with items such as energy bars, lotions, small journals and stickers.

There will also be a photo area where students can take pictures with signs that feature positive affirmations. Students can post these pictures to Instagram using #BeYOUtifulScranton.

The JKWC has addressed body image and body appreciation since its opening but has focused a lot on Love Your Body day for the past eight years, according to JKWC Director Justine Johnson.

Love Your Body Day will take place 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Oct.15 on second floor of the DeNaples Center, and University students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
