The men’s lacrosse team opened its season with three straight losses in three close games. The team lost its first game 8-6 against Farmingdale State College. Sophomore attacker Jake Haimson led the team with three goals for the Royals, but Farmingdale won with three unanswered goals of its own to finish the game. The Royals had their next game against DeSales University and fell 8-7. Junior attacker Andrew Marone and junior midfielder Josh Kasman each scored two goals for the Royals. In its third game of the season the team had another 8-7 loss, this time at the hands of Muhlenberg College. Junior Alec Mikrut and senior Will Mahle led the Royals with two goals each.

The Royals won their first game Wednesday against Marywood University. Mahle and junior Nick Mullery each scored two goals in the team’s 6-3 victory. Senior Anthony Lombardo contributed two assists. The win brought the Royals to a 1-3 record for the season.

Senior Matt Finor has won 45 of 64 face-offs, giving him a strong winning percentage of 70 percent over the team’s first four games. Finor’s performance in the first game earned him the title of Landmark Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Despite their slow start, the Royals will look to be serious competitors for the conference championship. Their last championship victory was in 2011. Preseason polls had this year’s team ranked second by Landmark Conference head coaches. The team has a strong veteran force with four returning 2014 first-team all-conference players.
