The University recently welcomed its newest Royal, David Martin, as its athletic director. Martin comes to The University from Misericordia University, where he served as athletic director for 11 years and the head coach of the men’s basketball team for 14 years. At Misericordia, he also was the associate athletic director and the coordinator of athletic recruiting. Martin is a native of Williamsport, PA.He is a graduate of Wilkes University and received a master of education from Misericordia.

He brings a wealth of experience to the position from his tenure at Misericordia. He was instrumental in the expansion and improvement of a variety of athletic facilities as well. Throughout Martin’s term at Misericordia, he achieved great athletic success, claiming 31 conference titles and making 25 NCAA tournament appearances. As the head men’s basketball coach, Martin led the team to 11 conference titles. His basketball experience extends to the national level, as he has served on both the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball committees. He looks forward to leading the many accomplished teams here at The University to even greater success, as the strength of the athletic teams here was one of the factors that drew him to take this position.

Additionally, Martin was drawn to the very welcoming community here and strongly believes in the ideals illustrated in a Catholic, Jesuit higher education. He looks to further implement a new vision and mission statement for student athletes, which will include Jesuit principles.

Martin looks forward to working with the tremendous coaching staff at The University, and feels that they are dedicated to being the best possible coaches they can be, while providing an outstanding experience for their student athletes to supplement a great academic experience.

While he is definitely passionate about his career, Martin’s passion also extends to his family. He reside locally in Dunmore, PA with his wife Jennifer and three daughters, Samantha, Maddie and Paige. When he is not working, Martin’s favorite thing to do is spend time with his family. He loves being a father; his favorite word in the English vocabulary is “daddy.”

He enjoys traveling with and watching Maddie play for her Amateur Athletic Union basketball team and attending Paige’s shows, as she is both a thespian and dancer. When it comes to his personal life, long-term, Martin says there is nothing more important than his family and kids. He is excited to watch his daughters grow as they take big steps in their lives and to see which paths their lives follow.

Looking back, Martin says he has been influenced by many important people over the years, with one special person in particular: his mother. She taught him many lessons throughout life, especially regarding gratitude, humility and having a strong work ethic. Additionally, Martin feels that his professional career has been shaped by a few meaningful coaches who have guided him over time; he would not be doing what he does today had it not been for them. He recalls a certain one, specifically, who taught him that the key to happiness and success is to find something you love to do, and find a way to get paid for it, which is exactly what Martin feels he is doing each and every day.

When he asked this coach what he could do to repay him for everything he had done for him, the coach simply told him to “pass it on.” Martin does so each and every day. He feels the name “coach” itself is special, which is why he prefers to go by “Coach Martin.”

While serious on the court or on the job, Martin definitely has a lighter side to him. You can always find him sporting a smile on the sidelines of Royal athletic events. He loves to laugh frequently, about anything and everything, and is not afraid to laugh at himself. He enjoys all kinds of music- anything from 80’s hits to Eminem- and is able to pull off a pretty good nae-nae, which proves popular amongst his daughters’ friends.

Martin is very happy to work on a college campus, for he feels it keeps him young. If you want to talk sports, Martin is definitely your guy. A fan of all sports, his favorite teams are the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers. Additionally, Martin is open to any feedback or concerns. Martin’s future plans for The University involve expansion of athletic facilities, as he did so quite successfully at Misericordia.

Overall, Coach Martin is very excited to be here at The University. He was very intrigued by the opportunity and believes that everything fell into the right place at the right time. He is extremely grateful for this new step and looks forward to working with the folks on campus. Welcome to The University, Coach!
