Senior Julia Frakes was struck by a car Wednesday while crossing Mulberry Street.

Lt. Glenn Thomas of the Scranton Police Department said police were dispatched to the scene at 5:30 p.m at Mulberry Street and Monroe Avenue. Frakes was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Community Medical Center.

Thomas said Susan Costanzo was the driver of the 2012 Buick that knocked Frakes to the ground. He said Costanzo told police she did not see Frakes because of the rainy conditions. Thomas said police did not charge or ticket Costanzo.

Friend of the victim, senior Emma Black, said Frakes was discharged from the hospital later that evening with hairline fractures along her spine, tailbone and sacral damage and leg and head injuries.

This is the second incident within a two-month span of a student getting hit by a car while crossing Mulberry Street. The incident occurred a day after University Police held a safety initiative there.
