Program tests yoga benefits

Assistant professor Scherezade Mama from Penn State University will conduct a 14-week yoga-based program. The program, called “Harmony & Health,” is aimed to increase physical activity and reduce health disparities among people who live in rural areas.

One hundred participants, 50 males and 50 females who are all over the age of 18 and who are either overweight or obese, will partake in this yoga-driven program aimed to increase physical activity, reduce sedentary time and reduce stress. The program also aims to study the possibility that yoga-based programs may reduce one’s risk for cancer.

Students at the University of Scranton can test yoga out for themselves at one of the two classes the University offers: energizing yoga or gentle yoga. Similar to the Penn State yoga program, the University of Scranton’s yoga classes aim to be both a mind and body workout. The goal of energizing yoga is to energize one’s body while also clearing one’s mind.

The goal of gentle yoga is to increase flexibility, reduce stress and relax sore muscles. First year student Aba Amon-Kwafo has practiced yoga in the past, however she has yet to attend a yoga class at the University. Amon-Kwafo does enjoy yoga and believes there are many benefits to practicing it.

“Yoga definitely reduces stress, so if you have time during your day I suggest doing it to release all of the inner energy that’s just making you very stressed out,” Amon-Kwafo said.

Energizing yoga classes take place Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Royals Room of the Bryon Recreation Complex. Gentle yoga classes take place every Friday from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. in the PNC Board Room of Brennan Hall. Anyone interested in taking a class is welcome to attend. There is no registration process for these classes.
